The 2008 CEASOM Spring Forum

“What Makes High Quality Teacher Professional Development WORKABLE?”

Challenge: What do we know about what makes high quality teacher professional development workable in Maryland?
  • Where are we as a state and why?
  • What do we know about planning, conducting, and evaluating high quality professional development, and about what Maryland educators have done to address these critically important aspects of professional development in ways that are not only workable, but excellent models and approaches?

Focus: These questions have been the focus of ongoing deliberation and study by members of the Maryland Professional Development Advisory Council, since it was formed in 2003. What has been learned offers guidance for school leaders and district leaders who seek to make high quality professional development a workable target.

A Forum: In the tradition of the public forum in the U.S., the CEASOM Spring Forum is organized so that:

  • the workability challenges of planning, providing, and evaluating high quality teacher professional development are addressed by members of the Maryland Professional Development Council, and
  • a commentary is made on the significance in the national arena of Maryland’s responses to questions about what makes high quality professional development workable.
